Petha from Agra is a world famous sweet. There are many different varieties of Agra's Petha with many falvours like mango, orange, mint etc.
The ash gourd (Benincasa hispidia) is called petha in Urdu and is also known in English as Wax Gourd, White Gourd and Chinese preserving gourd. It is sometimes called the winter melon or white melon.
Although Petha is made in the northern states of India, it is equally famous in the other parts of the Indian subcontinent also. The Petha of Agra is most famous throughout India. Alum is used to make the pethas clean and bacteria free. Pethas have been used since ancient times as a medical plant and a vegetable, although it is a main ingredient of sweets being prepared from petha.
